The HOA is now accepting applications for committee positions. The three committees that have the greatest financial impact are, the Financial Advisory Committee (FAC), Architecture Committee (AC) and the Golf Operations Committee (GOC).
A number of committee members get “Rubber Stamped” each year for their current committee. Those members are listed below: FAC- Raymond Cej – 5 years+ FAC- Harold Cipin – 4 years+ FAC- Christopher Hebb – 6 years+ AC – Don Milligan- 3 years AC- Lynn Cipin- 6 years+ GOC- Fred Elliott- 6 years+ GOC- Bill Bender- 3 years GOC- Ron Fairburn- 6 years+ GOC- John Wong- 3 years The following questions arise:

Reviewing the list of the committee members, all but Bill & Fred are Canadians. Not surprising as we have had a Board President from Canada for the past 4 years. If these committees are so important the members should be full time homeowners who live at Desert Princess. The board of directors have term limits of 3 years for 2 terms, unless you are Russ Holowachuk who can serve for 3 terms because he is from Canada. Shouldn't the committee's also have term limits? This would allow other homeowners to express new ideas. Where is the Diversity, Equality, Inclusion of the committees? Many of my friends who are well qualified have applied to the different committees. Unfortunately, they were not chosen, guess you have to be a Canadian!

Seriously, DEI???!!! What difference does it make where someone lives most of their he year? It should be based on merit, PERIOD!

I agree Richard…..we need to term out committee members..we desperately need new blood on all the committees. I know many people that have applied for various committee and have been rejected..year after year. Many have much more knowledge than the “ good ole boys” on most of the committees.

Fred Elliott has been on the GC / GOC for 30 + years 6 +!years doesn’t even begin to say how many years he has been rubber stamped in over & over. GOC need to be more golfers who are concerned for the conditions of our golf course. I was finally put on this committee after 8 years of being turned down. The reason was always given that was I criticized staff??? I thought the staff worked for us condo owners. Being on this committee has been so eye opening as we don’t put the Superintendent’s feet to the fire enough we don’t push him, plus he believes that Fred Elliott is his boss ??? That’s a whole other story about Jerry Storage.

My sincere thanks to all of those who donate their time to serve on these committees, helping make our community such a wonderful place to live. I care not whether you are male or female, what your citizenship is, or whether you live here full time or part time. It's fair to ask about selection criteria, however, and my feeling is that committee membership ought to be representative of the constituency it represents, e.g., the Golf Tournament Committee should have a distribution of handicaps/playing ability that mirrors the entire collection of golf members at the Desert Princess (i.e., those that are eligible to enter our golf tournaments).

FYI, the handicaps of the people serving on the golf tournament committee range from 2 to 40. In addition, as far as I know, everyone who applied for this committee got on it.

Thank you so much for raising this issue, particularly now that the call has gone out for volunteers. Frankly, a thorough housecleaning is required of ALL the committees. Many are definitely constituted by well-meaning residents who refuse to relinquish their positions to make room for the many new DP residents who are anxious to volunteer. I recall in March 2022, Peter Webb announced only one third of all committee members had turned over. This is a most unacceptable percentage for a community our size. Acceptance on DP committees has always been about who you know, not what you know and what you may have to offer. Time for a change!

It was difficult for me to get on the "Fitness Center Redesign Committee" a couple years ago. There was never a "call" put out for committee members to apply. I heard about it during a board meeting. Twice, I asked to be on the Committee, and was ignored. I had to persist and contact numerous people to learn that there was an official "application form" I had to fill out. Then, I received a phone call from the Committee Chair who interviewed me. about my interest and "qualifications." Then, my application was sent to the entire Board, where it had to be approved. Interestingly however, about one month after I joined the group of all male committee members, another woman was welcomed into the committee. I learned, however, that she neither filled out an application, NOR was she formally approved by the Board. Interesting......and yes, I agree that out of the 1206 domiciles we have here at DP, that there are likely many people who would be interested in serving on committees IF ANY of the long term members would ever leave. There definitely should be opportunities, and that does mean, term limits. In reality, only a handful of people run the show here.

Bingo, MH. Now you've got it! It's like a small exclusive "club" that has been closed to the great unwashed for years. Why else does this place look and operate essentially the same as is it did when when I purchased here 19 years ago. Same old same old boring events, year in year out. And the clubhouse......what a total embarrassment! I've see better dining accommodation in a subsidized assisted living facility. We need to blow the cobwebs out of this place with new ideas and governance.

I have been here for 24 years went to meetings back in the 2002 time frame and guess what ...... nothing here has really changed it's the same ol' slog. Still "hoping" to see meaningful changes. By the way I'm a dual citizen of the USA and Canada which I left many years ago. Go Maple Leafs!!!!!!!

Rather than everyone submitting comments about whether a Board member is a Canadian or not, we need to have good ideas/suggestions as to how this community can SAVE $.

Totally agree Lynn! Better hope Maureen doesn't get elected. She sounds as controlling as Terry Swartz.
